Mir Akbar joined
the Pakistan Military Academy in 1965 and was
commissioned in 1967. After serving the army for
29 long years, he retired as a full colonel in
1995. He graduated from Command & Staff College
Quetta. He held various command, staff and
instructional appointments including Brigade Major
of Infantry Brigade (twice) and Instructor at Army
Logistics School. He also served as First
Secretary at the Pakistan Consulate, Jeddah, Saudi
Arabia.
He pursued his
education further, and holds a masters degree in
Economics from the University of Punjab and a
qualification in the German language.
Col.(R)
Mir Akbar Ali Khan has been
very active with the Petarians
after his retirement. He was the
President of the Petarian
Association during 1997-98.
He also kept up
with professional activities. After retirement
from the army, he was appointed as the Managing
Director of Sindh Engineering (Pvt) Ltd., a unit
of the Ministry of Industries and Production /
Pakistan Automobile Corporation. He served in this
position for nearly 4 years.
Over the past
several years, Col.(R) Mir Akbar has been working
with United Bank Limited as Senior Vice President
/ General Manager for Employee Relations.
In May, 1999,
Col.(R) Mir Akbar was honoured
once again. Zafarwal Medium Regiment celebrated its Golden
Jubilee on its 50th Founder’s day
that year. This
was also the occasion for the recognition of the
Colonel of the Regiment Function. The officer
chosen for this prestigious position was none
other than Col.(R) Mir
Akbar Ali Khan, who was formally decorated with
the rank.
The chief guest
for the function was the famous Gen.
(R) Tikka Khan, the
first commanding officer of the unit, who had come
all the way from Rawalpindi to grace the occasion.
The CO briefed the
audience about the unit and its achievements over
the years and during the wars. He outlined the
history including its role in the 1965
Indo-Pakistan war, in the Rann of Kutch operations
which paved the way for success. The unit
supported the 7th Punjab Regiment was
active in the Kasur Sector during the September
war. Later, in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, the
unit was active in the Zafarwal sector. In this
sector, the unit was instrumental in providing
support to a task force of the Armoured Corps.
This tremendous support led to the award of the
“Zafarwal” name to the unit.

The new
Colonel of the Regiment delivered a speech in
which he outlined details of his 29 years of
service to the army. He pointed out that he had
served several units of the army during this
period. However, the enjoyment out of command of
the 12th Medium Regiment surpassed all
other services. “Therefore, this unit is the
closest to my heart as compared to all other
units”, he said. He also pointed out that it is a
striking coincidence that the Yaum-e-Takbeer and
the Establishment Day of this unit are the same,
i.e. 25th of May.
It is indeed an honour for all
Petarians that Col.(R)
Mir Akbar Ali Khan has been recognized for his
services. We wish him further success in the
