Mirza Ashfaque Beg is the universal "Ashfaque Bhai"
for all Petarians. He is a very loving Petarian
and makes sure that he takes care of all the
youngsters like us.
He excelled in studies at Petaro and
stood second in the Hyderabad Board during his
Intermediate Examinations in 1963 and was awarded
the Stick of Honour in 1962-63.
Ashfaque Bhai was one of the founding members of
the Petarian Association. He served the
association as its President twice - during
1990-92 and 1995-96. He served the Managing
Committee in different capacities as well during
other years.
Mirza Ashfaque Beg joined Pakistan Navy soon after
passing out from Petaro in 1964 and was
commissioned as an officer in 1967 in the
Engineering Branch after completing his Bachelor
of Engineering (Mechanical) from Karachi
University. He
participated in the 1971 war.
He qualified from PN Staff College Course in 1977.
During his service period, he was posted on the PN
ships Babur, Khaibar, Jahangir and Dacca. In ashore
postings, he as also the Training Commander
Engineering at the PN Engineering College, three
year deputation to Kuwait Naval Force, Director
and Staff Officer at Naval Headquarters Islamabad,
Fleet Engineer Officer, Captain Fleet Maintenance
Group at Fleet HQ, and General Manager Ship
Rebuild and Construction at PN Dockyard. He
retired from the Navy as a commodore in 1998.
During his service with the Navy, he served as
Director, Ship Management in PNSC as well. After
his retirement, he worked with the Defence
Authority, Karachi as Director for setting up the
Desalination Plant.
Cdre. Ashfaque Beg has been known to be a good writer.
He has written several articles on Petaro of the
early days and about Col. Coombes.
He has always been like an elder brother to me, and has
always showered his love on me and on all Petarians. His voice
is a voice of moderation and seeking to bring people together.
