Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi is the eldest son of the
ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan - Mr. Ghulam Mustafa
Jatoi, who was once a key member of the late
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party.
When Ghulam Mustaf Jatoi left PPP, so did other
members of his family, and they formed the
National People's Party or NPP in the late 1980s.
The family has been in politics for over five
decades now, and Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi has been the
scion of the family. He was elected to the Sindh
Provincial Assembly as well as the National
Assembly during the 1980s and 1990s. He held the
position of Federal Minister for Communications as
well as the Sindh Provincial Minister for Food and
Agriculture under Arbab
Ghulam Rahim's government.
He was unable to
contest in the October 2000 general elections as
he could not fulfill the condition of having a
Bachelor's degree. He then had to sit for exams
and obtained his degree which allowed him to get
back into the Sindh Provincial Assembly through a
bye-election in 2004.
During the Musharraf
regime, the Jatoi family became key allies of the
PML-Q and held key portfolios. At one point in
time, Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi was even tipped to
become the Chief Minister of Sindh.
In the 2008
elections, although most of the allies of PML-Q
suffered badly, Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi won a seat to
the National Assembly under the banner of NPP from
NA-211 Naushahro Feroze-1.
The Jatoi family are
one of the largest landlords of Sindh and continue
to wield extensive power over the areas where they
have their lands. Despite the land reforms during
the Bhutto regime, the Jatoi family is still said
to own over 30,000 acres of land in Sindh.
Murtaza Jatoi spent
two years at the San Jacinto College in Texas,
from where he did not graduate. It was after the
year 2000 when he finally acquired his bachelor's
degree in Pakistan.
Although his
ancestral lands are at New Jatoi in Dist.
Nawabshah, Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi spends most of his
time at Karachi where his family is settled.
