Shahid Iqbal
got his commission as an officer of the Pakistan
Navy in 1974 in the Operations Branch.
He is an operations
specialist and holds Principal Warfare Officer
Specialization from School of Maritime Operations
UK. He is graduate of Pakistan Navy and Turkish Staff
Colleges and holds Master’s degree in Defence and
Strategic studies from National Defence University
Islamabad, which he qualified
in 1999.
Vice Admiral Shahid
has rich experience of various command and staff
appointments. His operational assignments included
Operation Officer duties onboard DDGs, Commands of
FAC (M) and Destroyer (DDG). As operational
staff, he has served as Fleet Navigation and
Operations Officer and Chief Staff Officer to
Commander Pakistan Fleet. At Naval
Headquarters, he held the duties of Director Naval
Operations, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff
(Operations) and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff
(Operations).
He has also served
as faculty member at PN War College and Armed
Forces War College (NDU). In addition he also
held the assignments of Director General Naval
Intelligence.
In October 2005, Shahid Iqbal was promoted to the
rank of a rear admiral of the Pakistan Navy for
his meritorious service.
In 2006, he was given the position as Commander
Task Force-150 (Multinational Naval Force
led by the US 5th Fleet) at NAVCENT
Bahrain, Commander Pakistan Fleet.
This is the first time in the
history of NAVCENT that an officer of a "regional
nation" (i.e. non-American or European) was given
command of any of the three coalition task forces
that comprise the Combined Maritime Force.
After return from Bahrain, he was appointed as Dy.
Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) in 2006-2007,
followed by appointment as Commander Pakistan
Fleet in 2008. He then served as DCNS (Training)
In October 2008, Shahid Iqbal was promoted to the
rank of Vice Admiral and
is presently serving
as Chief of Staff at Naval Headquarters Islamabad.
