Shafi got his initial education from St. Paul High
School in Karachi before joining Petaro in 1966.
He was always fond of cricket and is an avid reader.
He entered the Naval Academy in 1972 and got his
commission as an officer of the Pakistan Navy in
1974 in the Operations Branch.
During his tenure with the Pakistan Navy,
has held various command and staff appointments.
On Operational sea billets he has commanded
Pakistan Navy destroyer PN SHAHJAHAN, PN Frigate
PNS SHAMSHER and has also Commanded 25th Destroyer
Squadron of Pakistan Navy. On staff side, he has
served as Squadron Commander at Pakistan Naval
Academy, Captain Training to Flag Officer Sea
Training and Fleet Operations Officer to Commander
Pakistan Fleet. At Naval Headquarters, he was
assigned the duties of Director Naval Warfare and
Operational Planning, Assistant Chief of Naval
Staff (Plans), Principal Secretary to Chief of the
Naval Staff and Director General Naval
Intelligence.
He is a Principal
Warfare Officer by specialization and has attended
PWO course and Command course for Type-21 Ships in
UK. He did his staff course from Newport, Rhode
Island USA and obtained his master (MSc) in
Defence and Strategic Studies from National
Defence College, Islamabad.
Shafi
was promoted to Flag rank (as
Rear Admiral) in March 2005. As Flag
Officer he has headed the Operations and Training
& Personnel Branches of PN in the capacity of
Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) and
Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Training & Personnel)
at NHQ. In the field, he has commanded Logistic
Command of PN before taking over his present
appointment as Commander Coast
(COMCOAST), Pakistan Navy.
During this assignment, he was promoted to the
rank of a Vice Admiral in 2007.
Vice Admiral Shafi is the author of the book
"Customs, Traditions and Ceremonials in the
Pakistan Navy". He also wrote and published an
article titled "Information Warfare - Impact on
National Security and Proposed Strategy for
Pakistan", NDC Journal, 2001.
