Nawal Rai
was the son of Nariandas Oad, who retired as
Deputy Collector and Judicial Magistrate. He was
one of the 12 brothers and 6 sisters. His other
real brother was the late
Gopichand Oad
523/Iqbal while
Arjandas Oad 76/Ayub,
Dr. Ramchand Oad
374/Ayub and Sirichand Oad 524/Iqbal were his step
brothers. Sirichand and Gopichand were also
my batchmates.
Nawal Rai was celebrated as a brilliant student at
Petaro. He excelled in his studies and stood third
in the Board examination for
Intermediate Examination.
After passing out from Petaro, he joined the NED
Engineering College and graduated as a Civil
Engineer in 1971. He then decided to sit for the
CSS examination and was selected in 1973. He
joined the Income Tax Group in 1975 after
obtaining his Income Tax Management and
Administration Training at the Directorate of
Income Tax, Lahore.
He also studied Tax Administration at the
University of Southern California in 1986. He also
acquired a Masters degree in Economics and an LLB
degree from Sindh University.
Nawal Rai expired on 10 January 2007 as a result
of cardiac arrest at Karachi.
His last position before his death was as
Commissioner of Income Taxes in Karachi.
