Azher got his
commission as an officer of the Pakistan Navy in
1974 in the Operations Branch.
He is a graduate of
Naval Staff College, USA and Armed Forces War
Course from NDC, Islamabad. He also qualified as a
GD(P) from Risalpur. He took courses from QFI
Flying Instructors School Risalpur, and P-3C
Instructor Conversion Course from Jacksonville,
Florida.
Vice Admiral Azher
has rich experience of various command and staff
appointments. He held various command
appointments including P-3 squadron when he was in
the USA, 27 Maritime at PNS Mehran, 18th Destroyer
Squadron, and Auxilliary and Mine Welfare
Squadron.
He commanded the
frigate PNS Zulfiqar and the minesweeper PNS
Mujahid. His staff appointments included
Assistant Chief of Naval Staff at the Naval
Headquarters, Chief of Staff to the COMKAR and
Officer In Charge at the Maritime Headquarters at
PNS Haider. In addition, he served as
Defence Attache of Pakistan at Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia from 1993-1996.
In 2005, he was
promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and appointed
as DG Training at the National Defence College
Islamabad. From 2008-2009, he served as the
Director General of the Pakistan Maritime Security
Agency. He was then appointed Commander of
Logistics (COMLOG), a position he held throughout
2009.
In June 2009, Azher was promoted to the rank of
Vice Admiral and remained the COMLOG. Towards the
end of 2009, he was appointed
the COMKAR. As a result, he became the first
Petarian to be the
Chairman of the Board of
Governors of Cadet College Petaro. It is
indeed an honour to be the head of the BOG of the
same institution where he had studied nearly 4
decades earlier.
He retired from
Pakistan Navy in 2010. After his retirement, he
has been appointed the Director General Ports and
Shipping at the Ministry of Ports and Shipping,
Govt of Pakistan.
