Junaid was one of the brightest students at
Petaro. He was also the Captain of the College
Shooting team of his
time.
During his final year at Petaro, he was given the
appointment as the Senior Under
Officer (SUO) of the college. He also won the
Badge of Honour
after Matric.
He was an excellent debater and was the Captain of
the College
English Debating Society. He was also the
President of the
Radio and Electrical Engineering Club at
Petaro, and the Editor in Chief of
The
Cadet magazine in 1970-71.
Junaid belonged to East Pakistan. He personally
went through a difficult time during the 1971
crisis. He left Pakistan soon thereafter, and did
not visit the country again for nearly 3 decades.
He moved to the USA, and graduated as a Mechanical
Engineer from the Northrop Institute of
Technology, California in 1974. He then got his MS
in Energy / Electrical Power from UCLA in 1976 and
an MBA from the Booth School of Business of the
University of Chicago in 1981.
Junaid started his career with Sargent & Lundy and
worked with them as a Project Manager on their
power generation projects from 1976 to 1989. He
led projects worth more than $300 million. He then
worked for Hadson/Ultrasystems from 1989-1991 as
Manager Project Development for a broad range of
power projects in USA and the UK. Lastly, he
worked for I Group LLC, a utility company from
1991 to 2003 as Vice President for project up to
$1 billion in USA, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh,
India, Malaysia, France and Germany.
In the meantime, he set up his own company called
Procurezone in 1999 which specialized in providing
cutting-edge internet based project management and
collaboration system for complex procurements in
the power and construction industries. He was the
President of this company from 1999 to 2003.
In 2003, he joined the Mayaguana Company LLC as
Executive Vice President for business and project
development.
Since 2008, he has been the President of Ansar
Energy LLC, which specializes in photovoltaic (PV)
technologies to develop multi-megawatt power
generation plants.
Junaid's sons are also brilliant, and all four of
them went to Harvard.
I
had the great opportunity to meet Junaid once
again when he visited Islamabad at the beginning
of 2002. It was such a pleasure to meet such a
great Petarian.
