Qayum was a good
sportsman and was the Captain of the
College Cricket team
in his final year at Petaro.
Qayum
joined the Merchant Navy soon after passing out
from Petaro. He did his apprenticeship from Gulf
East Management Ltd, Hong Kong. He then went on to
get his Class IV and Class III Certificates of
Competency from The Nautical College, Fleetwood,
UK; and his Class II and Class I Certificates from
the Australian Maritime College, Launceton,
Tasmania, Australia. He obtained the diploma
of Applied Science (Ship Master) from Australian
Maritime College. He holds the Master MOT COC
Grade.
He has served as
Master (Captain) on foreign going containers, bulk
carriers and general cargo vessels since 1997,
sailing on vessels from Singapore, Malaysia and
Malta. He has sailed under PIL chartered
vessels and completed three contracts.
He has also served
in the capacity of Chief officer and Junior
Officer on bulk and general cargo vessels in the
past.
Qayum has had many
different experiences in his field. He is well
experienced in ship handling, cargo documentation,
cargo handling, stowage containers planning and
related difficulties, cargo inspection, etc. He is
very familiar with cargo vessel surveys, container
vessel services, experience of dry docking,
delivery of new vessels and repair works.
He is also well
versed, experienced and knowledgeable in ISM, port
state control, and ISPS (International Ship and
Port Security System).
He has dealt with
employees of all nationalities with higher safety
standards, and completed an HR Management Course
from Australia. He is highly skilled in handling
crew and labourers.
Two of Qayum's
nephews (his late brother's sons) are Petarians -
Syed Abdul Rafay 2008058/Liaquat and Syed Abdul
Wasay 2009180/Latif.
