During his years at Petaro, Aslam was a member of
the college Athletics team and the college
Shooting team. He was the unbeaten athlete for
1500m race since 9th class. He also represented
Hyderabad Board and the Hyderabad District in
athletics during those years as well.
He was appointed
Senior Section Leader of Jinnah House during 12th
class. He was also chosen as the best Social
Worker for 2 years at Petaro. After Matric, he was
selected as N Cadet which paved his way to join
the Navy.
Aslam joined Pakistan Navy after leaving Petaro in
1976. As a naval cadet, he won the Gold Medal in
Cross Country Race. He obtained Watch Keeping
Certificate from PNS Taimoor and then served on
different ships. He then joined the Special
Services Group (SSG) Navy.
During the early
years with the Navy, he commanded the fast patrol
boat PNS Gilgit and was then appointed
commissioning executive officer of PNS Azmat (type
21 missile boat) after completing SY-1 missile
course conducted by Chinese. He also stood first
in the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) course.
Aslam was then
appointed as Cadet Admin Officer in Junior Cadet
College at PNS Rahnuma. He then got appointed as
Commanding Officer of PNS Himmat (type 21 missile
boat), and promoted as Lieut. Commander. This led
to appointment as Fleet Anti-submarine Warfare
Officer to Commander Pakistan Fleet.
As Executive Officer
of Eriden Class Mine Hunter, he was sent to France
for mine warfare training, and he brought back the
mine hunter from France as EXO and Operations
Officer. He qualified in the Mine Warfare and Mine
Hunting Courses during his stay in France. Upon
his return, he was appointed Executive Officer on
board PNS Taimoor (destroyer).
After serving as
Officer In Charge of Anti Submarine Warfare School
at PNS Bahadur, he was then posted as Commanding
Officer and Station Commander Navy at PNS Punjab
in Lahore. Upon return from Lahore, he qualified
the Command Course at FOST HQ and was posted on
board PNS Moawin (combat support ship) and
promoted to the rank of Captain.
During the following
years, he held the position of Commanding Officer
PNS Himalaya and Station Commander, Manora
Cantonment Board. He was nominated for managing
defence in a democratic based society at Cranfield
University, UK and successfully qualified in the
course.
After posting at the
Naval Headquarters Islamabad as Director Civilian
Personnel and Director Safety Pakistan Navy, he
was finally promoted to the rank of Local
Commodore and posted as Commander Training Ashore
(CTA) to the COMKAR (Commander Karachi). This was
his last active posting in the Navy before being
appointed as the Principal of Cadet College Petaro
in May 2007
During his tenure as Principal, President
Asif Ali Zardari
visited Petaro as the Chief Guest at the Parents'
Day in December 2008. While he was Principal, he
also took evening classes and qualified for a
Masters in Public Administration in 2009.
Cdre. Aslam Rana promoted a stronger relationship with
the Petarian
Association to enhance the relationship with
the Petarian community. The
Petarian Foundation continued with its support
to the college during his tenure with greater
number of scholarships and the annual grant for
Hajj sponsorship for one CCP employee.
