It has always been the
objective of the college to produce cadets who would excel both in
academics as well as in sports. Apart from having a rigorous daily
program of physical exercise and drill, every student is required to
participate in outdoor sports every single day of the week in the evenings.
The college has
extensive facilities and grounds for cricket, hockey, football
(soccer), basketball, tennis, athletic tracks and squash. In
addition, the college has a beautiful swimming pool and a shooting
range. The riding club offers an opportunity to learn horseback
riding and equestrian sports. Additionally, the college has
facilities for almost all sorts of indoor games and sports like
badminton, table tennis, etc.
Inter-house sports competitions and tournaments are held every year
for each sport. Every house has its own teams. Points scored in Inter House
Sports competitions count towards the Champions Trophy.
In
addition, the College teams compete in every sport against teams of
other colleges and institutions. The best cadets are chosen to be
members of the college teams.

the Famous Forties
"Inter Services Schools Sports
Tournament" or ISSST was established in 1961 as a competition
between “services schools” of Pakistan. The idea was first
conceived by Col. Coombes in 1959, who lobbied with GHQ, NHQ and Air
HQ. He was able to get all the services schools to agree to
participate in this tournament. During the upcoming years, the
participating schools were Cadet College Petaro, Cadet College
Hasan Abdal, Military College Jhelum, PAF Public School Lower Topa
and PAF College Sargodha.
The venue used to be
at one of these cadet colleges / public schools by rotation.
President Field
Marshal Mohammed Ayub Khan donated the ISSST Championship Shield,
which would be awarded to the college that won overall during the
tournament. Hasan Abdal presented the “Football Challenge Cup” for
this tournament.
The
first ISSST was hosted by Cadet College Hasan Abdal in December
1961. Hasan Abdal and Jhelum scored equally, and were the joint
champions in the first tournament. Sargodha had not participated.
Major General Umrao Khan was the Chief Guest. The results were as follows:

Petaro never won the
Championship Shield until the year 1966. Prior to that, Petaro used
to win primarily the Shooting Tournament in ISSST. It lost in most other
sports to CCH, MCJ and Lower Topa.
When Petaro won 1966,
it became a great event for us. And then we never looked back. We
also won 1967, 1968 and 1969.
The win of 1966, 1967
and 1968 was celebrated to the extent
that the Petaro contingents of those three years have gone down in
the annals of Petaro as the "Famous Forties". The contingent used to
be of around 40 cadets. It was always considered to be a matter of prestige
to be a member of the contingent of 40 that would go and compete
against the other colleges.
After 1969, ICCST was
abandoned. Hasan Abdal and Jhelum claimed that Petaro was inducting
professional sportsmen as students which was not the case. Petaro
had invested in good coaching and proper training, and that was
their secret. With objections from other colleges, ICCST came to an
end.
Over the past decade
or more, this tournament has been revived in a way in the form of
the event between the 4 cadet colleges of Sindh i.e. Petaro, Cadet
College Sanghar, Cadet College Larkana and Cadet College Steel Mills
Karachi. Petaro has been in the lead during most of the years.
During 2005-2007,
Petaro made an attempt to revive the ICCST on a national level again
by trying to invite all cadet colleges of Pakistan to participate.
Unfortunately, most of the cadet colleges either declined or did not
respond. So after repeated efforts, this matter was dropped from the
agenda of the Board of Governors of Cadet College Petaro. |
