Abdul Aziz Sb's family
belongs to Madras in India (now known as Chennai). His
father was a railway officer. When Pakistan was created
in August 1947, the family moved to East Pakistan, and
settled down in Ishurdi near Rajshahi. His father
continued his service with Pakistan Railways thereafter.
The young Abdul Aziz was
admitted to the Nazimuddin Railway High School at Ishurdi right from the
beginning in 1951, and he completed his Matric from there in
1958. He then moved to Dhaka and joined the Quaid-e-Azam
College, from where he completed his Intermediate in
1960 and BSc in 1962. Coming back to Rajshahi, he then
graduated with an M.Sc. in Mathematics from Rajshahi
University in 1964.
Right after graduation, he
was appointed as a Mathematics teacher at the Government
College in Kushtia in 1964. He was employed at this college
until 1974, although he was unable to go there
physically after December 1971 when Bangladesh was created out of East
Pakistan.
The events of 1971 had a
drastic effect on his life. The area where his family
lived in Rajshahi had a large Urdu speaking population.
When the war was over, ICRC stepped in to protect the
Urdu speaking Pakistanis in that area. Their residential
area was converted into an ICRC refugee camp, and his
family remained there for the next 3 years. With the
situation being extremely volatile, he remained idle and
could not do much. They remained as refugees until 1974.
After the Simla Agreement,
several people were repatriated to West Pakistan (which
now was the remaining Pakistan). ICRC made the
arrangements, and his family was lucky that they were
transported to Karachi in the latter half of 1974. This
is unlike hundreds of thousands of others who continue
to languish in refugee camps in Bangladesh more than 40
years after that unfortunate war and separation of
Bangladesh.
Soon after arriving in
Karachi, he applied for a job with Cadet College Petaro,
and was selected. He joined the college in November
1974. Thus, Petaro became his home until he retired
finally in 2002. In fact the college was his life.
He was promoted to
the position of Assistant Professor sometime
1982 and as Professor in 1996.
Soon after he joined, he
was appointed the Assistant House Master of Liaquat
House in 1975. After being the Assistant House Master
until 1981, he was appointed the
House Master of
Liaquat House and served in that capacity from 1981
to 1996 - the longest serving house master. He was
appointed the Divisional Technical Officer in 1996. In 2000, he
was appointed the Divisional Coordination Officer (Senior House Master) of the college. He
was the Patron of the
Map Sketching
Club in the 1980s.
When I asked him, he said
that he simply loved his position as House Master. Those
were memorable years for him, and have left an indelible
mark on him. During his period as House Master, Liaquat
House was Champion House 8 or 9 times. This was another
record for him and the college.
When
Ghani Sb was appointed
the Vice Principal, Abdul Aziz Sb became the Head of
Department of Mathematics in 1996.
In addition, he also held
several other administrative positions at the college.
Some of the important positions included being Chairman
of Purchase Committee, in charge of New Entry (conduct),
in charge of building department, in charge of Central
Store, and In Charge of college cricket. He also used to
play billiards and tennis.
In 2001, a year before his
retirement, he decided to avail his LPR, and moved to
Karachi. He settled down in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and joined
Hyderi Paradise Girls College as Professor of Maths for
a few months. He then got a job as Senior Master
(Professor) of Mathematics for O Levels students at
Aitcheson Model School in Karachi. He has been teaching
at this school since 2001 and continues to do so.
