Prof. Affan Maqsood - 2011

Prof. Affan Maqsood was
professor of English Language at Cadet College Petaro from
1969-1996. He was also the Head of Dept. of
English from 1988-1996.
He was born on 9
November, 1936, and got married to Mrs. Shakila on 17
April 1966. They have
five children - daughter Farhat, son Ghaus 8302/Iqbal,
daughter Nusrat, daughter Saba and son Azeem 9446/Latif.
Mr. Affan Maqsood started
his career in 1963 as producer of radio shows and programs.
His focus was English language programs, talk shows, news
reel, English drama, Youth Forum, Brains Trust, Forces'
Programs and Educational Broadcasts. Some of these programs
were broadcast on the national hook-up.

Prof. Affan joined Petaro
shortly after I left the college. We never met at Petaro.
But it was decades later when we finally met and got to know
each other in the year 2003.
Affan Sahib obtained his
M.A. degree in English in 1968 from the University of Karachi.
His emphasis was on phonetics. Over the years, he has attended
a number of other training courses as well. These included a
course teaching English as a subject at the US Information
Service Center at Karachi, and a special course on direct
teaching methods conducted by the British Council in the Yemen
Arab Republic.
During his 27 years at
Petaro, he held other administrative positions as well. He was
the Divisional Officer of Iqbal House followed by Divisional
Coordination Officer from 1975-1984. He was also over all in
charge of Literary Activities and Student Career Planning.
He remained the
Patron of
The Cadet magazine from 1988 to 1996.
During the course of his
stay at Petaro, he traveled abroad twice on deputation through
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Ministry of Education. He
remained in Algeria during 1971-72 and in the Yemen Arab
Republic from 1984-86. He taught English to Arab students
during these periods.
After retirement from
Petaro, Affan Sahib joined Sadiq Public School, Bahawalpur, to
teach English to Intermediate, "O" Levels and "A" Levels
students. He worked there from 1996 to 2002. During this
period, he was also in charge of Declamation Contests and
English Debates at the School. He was also a Member of the
Editorial Board of the College Magazine.
Prof. Affan Maqsood worked
as the Head of Department of English at the Women's Institute
of Science and Humanities, Islamabad (affiliated with Riphah
University) from 2003-2011. He then took retirement due to
health reasons.
